Twenty minutes inland from Las Terrenas, the Salto El Limón drops roughly 40 meters through a curtain of jungle into a cool, green swimming hole. The classic way up is on horseback along a muddy ranch trail — guides walk alongside, and the horses know every step — though strong walkers can hike it.
The reward at the top is a swim beneath one of the Caribbean’s prettiest waterfalls, and the kind of quiet you only get when the road in is a little difficult.
Los Haitises National Park
Across the bay lies a maze of jungle-topped limestone karsts rising out of the water, sea caves painted with Taíno petroglyphs, and mangrove channels alive with frigatebirds and pelicans. It is one of the Dominican Republic’s most otherworldly landscapes, explored by boat with a local guide.
This is the greenest corner of the Dominican Republic — and it shows.
