Las Terrenas may be the best eating town of its size in the Caribbean, thanks to its unusual history: Dominican cooking and European kitchens have shared the same streets for fifty years. You can have fresh-caught fish in coconut sauce — pescado con coco is the Samaná signature dish — for lunch, and hand-rolled pasta or a proper French pastry by evening.

They heard what a guest wanted, remembered it, and made it happen. That makes you feel seen.

Start at the Fishermen’s Village

The Pueblo de los Pescadores, the old fishermen’s village turned waterfront restaurant row, puts tables close enough to the water to hear it. In town, colmados blast merengue and sell ice-cold Presidente beer, fruit stands pile up mangoes and passionfruit, and bakeries sell baguettes that would pass inspection in Lyon.

Dining at Donoma

At the resort itself, Solmarella serves coastal cuisine with Dominican flavors, the Splash Bar handles easy poolside lunches, and the Sunset Bar pours artisanal drinks steps from the beach.

And Then There’s Mamajuana

The Dominican Republic’s famous infusion of rum, red wine, and honey steeped with tree bark and herbs, sipped as a digestif and offered as a gesture of welcome. Ask about it at Donoma: on Karen’s last stay, a guest’s casual mention of mamajuana sent the concierge on a mission, and a house-made batch appeared by the next evening. Expect a toast or two on this trip.
