Ultimate 12-Day Norway Itinerary: Bergen, Fjords, Flåm & Lofoten

Norway is one of those destinations where poor itinerary design can quietly ruin a great vacation. Distances look manageable on a map. Then mountains, ferries and fjords intervene.
The solution isn’t seeing more. It’s moving intelligently. This 12-day Dorian Destinations itinerary connects three distinctly Norwegian experiences: Bergen and Fjord Norway, the legendary Flåm/Nærøyfjord corridor, and the Arctic landscapes of Lofoten.
One spectacular day is worth more than three rushed stops.
Days 1–2: Bergen
Begin in Bergen rather than rushing immediately toward the fjords. Explore Bryggen, Bergen’s harborfront neighborhoods and the city’s food scene.
Use day two to settle into Norwegian time and enjoy the city before the landscapes become the main event. Bergen is also one of Norway’s natural gateways into Fjord Norway.
Dorian upgrade: Private food-focused walking experience followed by a great seafood dinner.
Day 3: Bergen → Myrdal → Flåm
Now the trip starts showing off. Take the Bergen Railway toward Myrdal and connect to the Flåm Railway, which descends roughly 20 kilometers toward the fjord village.
Visit Norway specifically recommends this Bergen–Voss–Myrdal–Flåm corridor as part of its fjord itineraries. Don’t treat Flåm as a two-hour cruise-port stop. Stay.
Day 4: Nærøyfjord + Aurland
Cruise the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord. Then head above Aurlandsfjord to Stegastein, approximately 650 meters above the water.
Visit Norway highlights both experiences among Flåm’s signature attractions. This is also where we’d deliberately slow the trip down.
Day 5: Active Fjord Day
Choose your intensity. Hike. Bike. Kayak. Or do almost nothing.
Visit Norway notes abundant mountain hiking and glacier opportunities throughout the fjord region. Dorian Destinations would build this day around the traveler rather than automatically assigning everyone the same sightseeing tour.
Days 6–7: Ålesund + Northwestern Fjords
Continue north toward Ålesund. The Art Nouveau city is a strong base for the northwest and can be paired with Geirangerfjord depending on season and routing.
Visit Norway currently promotes itineraries combining Ålesund with Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen during the summer season. Spend one day exploring the city and another focused on the surrounding landscapes.
Day 8: Fly North
This is where we break one of the classic itinerary rules. Fly.
Trying to connect every Norwegian destination overland sounds romantic until you’ve spent your vacation staring at transportation schedules. Use aviation strategically and move north toward Lofoten.
Days 9–11: Lofoten Islands
Lofoten is the payoff. Mountains rise almost vertically from the sea. Fishing villages sit beneath peaks. Beaches look improbably tropical until you remember you’re above the Arctic Circle.
Visit Norway describes opportunities for hiking, fishing, ocean rafting, riding, diving and even surfing here.
Day 9
Settle into a high-end rorbu-style accommodation and explore nearby fishing villages.
Day 10
Private hiking or photography day.
Day 11
Get on the water—RIB excursion, kayaking or fishing depending on season and interests. This is not where we would over-schedule. Lofoten needs room for weather and spontaneity.
Day 12: Depart via Bodø/Oslo
Return toward Oslo for the international connection—or add several nights there if your schedule allows.
When Should You Go?
For this exact itinerary, late May through September provides the easiest combination of fjord activities, northern access and long daylight.
Travel outside that window can be extraordinary, but the trip should be redesigned around the season rather than copied blindly.
Dorian Destinations Verdict
The mistake travelers make in Norway is trying to collect destinations. We would rather build a progression: City → railway → fjord → mountains → Arctic islands.
Every few days the country changes character. That’s what makes the journey memorable. Ready to plan the full trip? Our curated luxury travel services and adventure travel specialists can build this itinerary — or something entirely different — around your pace.
