Goa gets the global attention. South Konkan gets the fishing villages, forested ghats, clear-water beaches, Malvani food and a coastline that still feels tied to local life.

On September 3, 2026, Indian Railways launched a new daily CSMT–Sawantwadi Road Express, creating a much more practical overnight link between Mumbai and the southern Konkan. The train covers roughly 510 kilometers, leaving Mumbai late at night and reaching Sawantwadi the following afternoon, with useful stops including Ratnagiri, Kankavli, Sindhudurg and Kudal.

The new train does not create a new destination. It makes an overlooked one dramatically easier to travel well.

That matters because this corner of Maharashtra is best experienced as a route, not a single beach stay. Sawantwadi’s craft traditions, Amboli’s misty Western Ghats, Malvan’s seafood culture, Sindhudurg Fort and Tarkarli’s coast can now be assembled into a week without relying on a domestic flight or an exhausting all-day drive from Mumbai.

Why the Konkan Train Route Is Worth the Detour

The appeal here is contrast. One day is spent with Sawantwadi artisans known for lacquered wooden toys. The next is in the waterfalls and biodiversity of Amboli Ghat. Then the itinerary drops toward the Arabian Sea for fishing villages, fort history and beach time.

It is also one of the rare Indian coastal routes where the strongest experiences remain fundamentally local: homestyle Malvani meals, village markets, family-run stays and boatmen who know the creeks and coast better than any resort concierge.

The 7-Day South Konkan Itinerary

Day 1 — Overnight Train From Mumbai

Board the 15087 CSMT–Sawantwadi Road Daily Express, the Konkan train, in Mumbai. The published schedule has the train departing around 11:55 p.m., which means you can use the day in Mumbai and sleep through the first part of the journey.

Day 2 — Sawantwadi

Arrive in Sawantwadi in the afternoon and settle into a heritage-minded stay or small local hotel. Spend the late afternoon around Sawantwadi Palace and seek out Chittar-community wooden-toy and lacquerware workshops.

Dorian pick: Do not treat the toys as souvenirs only. Ask for a workshop visit where you can understand the hand-painting process and how the craft is being kept viable.

Day 3 — Amboli Ghat

Drive into the Sahyadri range for Amboli, about 37 kilometers from Sawantwadi Road by Maharashtra Tourism’s guidance. The hill station sits around 690 meters above sea level and is known for waterfalls, dense forest and biodiversity.

In September, the landscape can still be lush from monsoon season, but trails and roads can be wet. For a more predictable hiking trip, November through February is easier.

Day 4 — Kudal, Malvan & Local Food

Descend toward the coast, pausing around Kudal before continuing to Malvan. Make food the centerpiece: kombdi vade, solkadhi, fresh fish, coconut-rich curries and seasonal local specialties.

Dorian pick: Book a home-cooked lunch rather than trying to make every meal restaurant-driven. This is a cuisine that makes more sense in the hands of a family kitchen.

Day 5 — Sindhudurg Fort & Malvan Coast

Take a local boat to Sindhudurg Fort when sea conditions permit. The 17th-century sea fort is the historical anchor of the region and a dramatic way to understand why this coast mattered strategically.

Spend the rest of the day around Malvan’s shore and market rather than rushing straight back to a resort.

Day 6 — Tarkarli & Devbag

Move south to Tarkarli and Devbag for the clearest beach day of the trip. Maharashtra Tourism promotes this area for snorkeling and scuba, but the practical water-sports season is generally October through May. In early September, treat the sea as weather-dependent and prioritize beach walks, creek excursions and local food unless operators confirm safe conditions.

Day 7 — Slow Morning & Return Train

Keep the morning deliberately open. Then return toward Sawantwadi Road for the overnight 15088 service, currently scheduled to leave around 5:20 p.m. and reach Mumbai the following morning.

Standout Local Experiences

Sawantwadi craft: The Chittar community’s painted wooden toys give the trip a cultural starting point before the landscapes take over.

Malvani cooking: Seek out meals centered on what’s actually in season rather than generic coastal menus.

Creek and village time: Devbag’s backwaters and smaller coastal communities are a better antidote to resort fatigue than adding another beach club.

Sindhudurg by boat: When sea conditions cooperate, approaching the fort from the water is part of the experience.

Best Time to Go

For the broadest range of activities, target October through March. The coast is drier, sea conditions are more reliable and snorkeling or scuba operators are more likely to be running. Monsoon and immediate post-monsoon travel can be spectacularly green, especially around Amboli, but requires more flexibility.

Who This Trip Is For

This is best for travelers who already know India’s major circuit and want something slower, regional and food-driven. It also fits repeat Goa visitors who are ready to trade nightlife and resort density for village-scale travel.

Booking & Logistics

The new daily Konkan train makes rail the cleanest way to build the trip from Mumbai. Current published timings show CSMT departure around 11:55 p.m. and Sawantwadi arrival around 2:15 p.m. the next day; the return leaves Sawantwadi around 5:20 p.m. and reaches Mumbai around 6:40 a.m. Schedules can change, so reconfirm before ticketing.

For the route itself, hire a local driver for Days 3–6 rather than trying to depend on point-to-point taxis. The distances are manageable, but the best stops are scattered.

Dorian Destinations Verdict

This is exactly the kind of route the new Konkan train can transform. Not because the places were inaccessible before, but because the logistics no longer overwhelm the experience.

Go for the coast, but leave room for Sawantwadi’s artisans, Amboli’s forests and long meals in Malvan. The hidden-gem version of India is often found in the transitions between destinations.
