Life At Dorian

What It’s Like to Be a Travel Advisor Here

The Dorian Destinations travel advisor team laughing together in the studio

Most days start the same way for a travel advisor at Dorian Destinations: a cup of coffee, an inbox of client questions, and a calendar full of itineraries in progress. No two days look alike, but the rhythm is familiar — checking in with a couple finalizing a honeymoon, confirming a river cruise cabin category, or walking a first-time client through what a bespoke trip actually involves.

A successful travel advisor here spends real time listening before recommending anything. Clients come to us because they want someone who understands not just where to go, but why a particular hotel, ship or region fits how they actually like to travel. That means a travel advisor is equal parts researcher, project manager and trusted advisor — someone who can hold a dozen moving pieces in their head and still remember a client mentioned an anniversary six months out.

Most of our team came to travel advising from other careers — hospitality, events, corporate travel, even law — and built their expertise here through mentorship rather than a single credential. New advisors typically shadow senior team members on real client calls for the first few months, sit in on supplier trainings from cruise lines and luxury hotel brands, and gradually take on their own book of clients as their comfort grows. Many choose to pursue certification through the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the industry’s leading trade organization for cruise specialists, though it isn’t required to join the team.

What sets a travel advisor apart at Dorian is the same thing that sets our clients’ trips apart: attention to the details that get missed elsewhere. That might mean flagging a port-time change before a client even notices, or remembering a dietary preference across three separate bookings. It’s steady, detail-driven work, and it’s genuinely rewarding when a client comes home and says the trip exceeded what they imagined.

Compensation combines a collaborative team structure with the independence to build your own client relationships over time, and there is real room to grow — several of our senior advisors started in support roles before building a full book of business of their own. If you would enjoy being the person a client calls first when a flight gets cancelled, this may be the right travel advisor role for you. We would rather hear from someone who is genuinely curious about the work than someone who simply checks every box on a job description, so if that sounds like you, we would love to talk.
